Dallas Morning News columnist William McKenzie joins us to talk about the government shutdown and how Texas lawmakers have been a part of the conversation.
I was surprised that the issue of redistricting–and how egregious abuse of this distorting practice so undermines democracy and fairness–didn’t even come up. It seems so central to any discussion of our ailing political system. It also has been argued that it’s our heavily gerrymandered districts that have some observers claiming we’re a center-right country, as this guest did, when plenty of evidence says we’re clearly more center-left. In fact, Democrats got more votes in the last election, and yet these votes did not amount to representation because of redistricting. So very frustrating for well-meaning voters.
