America’s Global Standing

Hour 2:        Politicians on the campaign trail constantly tell us that America is no longer what it once was. But the view from outside our borders may not be so pessimistic. We’ll talk this hour with Josef Joffee, editor of the German weekly Die Zeit. His new book is The Myth of America’s Decline: Politics, Economics, and a Half Century of False Prophecies (Liveright, 2013).

I don’t see what is so desirable about America being a world power. In effect, Mr. Joffee is arguing for America being an empire. The problem with empires such as the British Empire, the Soviet Empire, and the American Empire is two-fold: (1) empire is a drain on the imperialistic nation (2) empires interfere with the natural social evolution of the subjugated nations. While we need to have sufficient power to defend ourselves, we do not need to have our fingers in everyone else’s pies.
