Hour 2:       This month, KERA kicked off a new multimedia initiative called One Crisis Away, which looks at North Texas families living with asset poverty. This hour, we’ll talk with filmmaker Harry Gantz, director of the documentary American Winter, which looks at families struggling to make it in Portland, Oregon. Gantz will screen the film at the Angelika Film Center in Dallas on Nov. 18 (reserve tickets here).

    Hi, Krys:
Wasn’t Barrack Obama supposed to fix the problem of poverty in America? Didn’t LBJ declare a “War on Poverty” some 49 years ago? How is it that the Democrat party fails every time they attempt to eradicate poverty?

    • Kevin Bradshaw

Jesus Christ encouraged us to love our neighbors and care for the poor ( we know what happened to him for his radical progressive liberal socialist agenda)and it still hasent been completely gotten through some peoples hard heads yet
LBJ was only human but lets hope it dosent take another 2000 years for the idea to catch on .

Instead of pointing fingers-the other side would say Republicans only interest is to help the wealthy at the cost of those suffering like the current interest in cutting Food Stamps. I would challenge that Ken I would challenge that is is a bigger issue than one party or the other, instead of pointing fingers or laying blame why not be a part of the solution. My church feeds some 200+ homeless and hungry every Saturday morning, why not join us or some other group where you can have a positive impact. Isn’t there enough negativity in the country today do we really need more. This is bigger than one party or the other these are real people suffering.

Via our church we have a food outreach once a month. There are approx 250 families who we try to “help up” in our community. But with that we also have 2 tables full of job opportunities, trade school info, GED info, and the like. The crowd at the table expresses all the same sentiment. “Please I need and want a job so to feed my family”. The desperation that I hear and see breaks my heart. At the same time, I know a number of small business owners. They are just trying to maintain. There are no new jobs at their companies and none on the horizon. Currently we are approaching the holiday season and there seems to be some seasonal jobs becoming open. Sadly, they are seasonal. And there will be numerous applications for the 1 position. The need is so great and I meet and talk to people are grateful for any and all help that they have received. Cutting the food stamps and pointing fingers does no good. I don’t have the answers but isn’t that what the brilliant minds of our country are supposed to be able to do?
