KERA News Announces Coverage of JFK Assassination Anniversary

DALLAS/FORT WORTH — KERA News presents The 50th: Remembering John F. Kennedy, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President Kennedy, beginning Friday, November 22 at 11 a.m. on KERA FM. This special broadcast will include two hours of live anchored coverage of the memorial event at Dealey Plaza in Dallas.

Produced by KERA News and hosted by KERA anchors Krys Boyd and Shelley Kofler, this memorial program will include field reports and features from KERA reporters and producers prior to the beginning of the ceremony. Listeners will hear remarks given by Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and historian David McCullough, as well as performances by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Navy Choir. The 50th: Remembering John F. Kennedy will be distributed to all commercial and public radio stations as a public service by KERA FM in Dallas-Fort Worth.

An unanchored live stream of the event will broadcast on KERA World 13.2 and online.

In advance of the 50th anniversary coverage, KERA FM will present three hours of JFK programming on Thursday, November 21, beginning with Think at noon. In the first hour, host Krys Boyd highlights interviews with newsmen Hugh Aynesworth and Jim Lehrer; “Dallas 1963” authors Steven Davis and Bill Minutaglio; as well as Mark Samels and Susan Bellows, the filmmakers behind PBS’ recent American Experience documentary “JFK.” At 1 p.m., relive what it was like along the parade route on the day of the assassination with Quin Matthews, Lisa Hembry and Katie Sherrod, who each welcomed the president to Dallas that day.

Following Think, KERA FM will air the Public Radio Exchange program We Knew JFK: Unheard Stories from the Kennedy Archives on Thursday, November 21 at 2 p.m. Robert MacNeil hosts the special, which features never-before-broadcast memories from Kennedy confidantes recorded just after the assassination.
