                                                                  To Do the Math

DALLAS/FORT WORTH – Explore the world around you with KERA’s Do the Math competition. It’s a chance for North Texas math teachers and students to investigate the many ways math is used in the real world and vie for a chance to win cash and prizes. KERA’s Do the Math contest runs Wednesday, September 3 to Monday, November 3, 2008.

Texas math teachers and their students in grades kindergarten to 6 are invited to submit original math word problems and fun activities illustrating how math is used in the real world. Submissions should focus on one of these five algebra readiness concepts; patterns, equivalency, measurement, reasonableness and problem solving. The activity should take no longer than thirty minutes to complete.

Contest details and entry forms are available at www.mathcantakeyouplaces.org or call the KERA Educational Resource Center at 214.740.9209 for more information. All submissions will be judged by a panel of educators. Contest winners take home cash and prizes. Winners will be named by November 17th with a reception to follow in January 2009. All submissions must be received by midnight Monday, November 3, 2008, to qualify.

Professional math teachers in grades kindergarten to 6 can download the official entry form and submit fun word problems and original activities that illustrate how math is used in the real world. Winning entries will be awarded cash prizes of $350 to $500.

Students in grades K to 6 can download the official entry form and submit original, fun and creative math word problems that relate to a real-world situation. They should be clearly written and easy to understand. Prizes include bicycles, Six Flags Over Texas tickets and iPods.
