KERA RECEIVES SEVEN LONE STAR AWARDS FROM HOUSTON PRESS CLUB

 

DALLAS/FORT WORTH – KERA, the public radio, television and online media affiliate for North Texas, is pleased to announce the receipt of seven Lone Star Awards, presented annually by the Houston Press Club. The station received five awards in the Radio category and two awards in the Internet-Based News group.

KERA News Director, Shelley Kofler, took first place in the Radio Politics/Government news category for her story GOP Claims Illegal Ballots, first place in the Radio Use of Sound category for the story World’s Best Selling Fruitcake: A Holiday Tradition and third place in the Radio Hard News Feature category for General Motors in Survival Mode. The judges commented, “The key to broadcast writing is to make the important story interesting and the interesting story important - she did that.”

Shelly Kofler and reporters Sam Baker, Bill Zeeble and B.J. Austin received second place honors in the Radio Public Affairs category for Sharing the Power. Shelly Kofler, Bill Zeeble and B.J. Austin were honored with a second place award in Radio Series group for their Family Values: Elections ’08 stories.

Jerome Weeks and Ivey Suber with KERA’s Art&Seek team received top honors for Best Feature Story in the Internet-Based News, Collaborative category for Seeing Red and Winspear Wings. The judges commented, “Good features on a building that’s sure to get lots of attention. Stories make construction sound interesting.” Jerome Weeks also received a third place award in the Internet-Based News, Original group, Opinion category for Art Review: Impressive Impressionists.
