Community Engagement Intern — Spring 2019
General Summary: The Community Engagement intern will assist the Community Engagement Director with a variety of tasks related to engagement and outreach for KERA’s special projects, children’s programming and grant-funded initiatives.
- Track news reports/stories (education, health/science/technology)
- Engage KERA audiences and identify new audiences through social media posts
- Provide assistance with routine communication (phone calls, emails, e-updates) to education and community partners
- Coordinate setup and logistics for KERA community engagement events
- Update partner databases and spreadsheets
- Assist with KERA Community Advisory Board – communication to CAB members, assistance with CAB application process
- Assist with administrative tasks relate to the community engagement department
- Assemble data for grants and stewardship reports as directed
- Assist with tracking data/metrics for special projects
KERA requires that the intern’s work earn credit or otherwise advance the student toward a degree, specific class or research project, and that a mentoring faculty member provide KERA with requirements the intern must meet to gain credit. The position is not paid, but KERA will work with the student and faculty member to ensure that the work provides valuable experience for the student.
Interns must be enrolled in a recognized learning institution as a full-time graduate or undergraduate student with freshman year completed. You should be able to work 12 to15 hours a week (unpaid) with availability between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., as well as occasional night/weekend events.
The position will begin in January 2019 and continue through the end of classes in Spring Term. Most of the work will be completed at the KERA station, 3000 Harry Hines Boulevard, Dallas, TX 75201.
- Ability to interact professionally with diverse audiences (internal staff, external stakeholders, volunteers, Community Advisory Board members, education and community partners)
- Good, clear written and oral communication skills
- Working knowledge of MS applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Experience using social media platforms
- Must be organized, detail-oriented and reliable
- Must be able to assist with planning, organizing and carrying out multiple functions simultaneously
- Graphic design experience is a plus
Available at least 12-15 hours per week. Schedule can be established to accommodate a student’s schedule. Interns typically work three- to four-hour shifts on the days they come into the station, and may also occasionally be asked to help with an event that takes place on an evening or a weekend.
