Internship – News Department

North Texas Public Broadcasting (KERA/KXT) is seeking a student intern for the summer or fall semester of 2012 to assist in the news department. The intern will report to the News Director and will work with reporters and staff in completing news assignments and projects. Intern applicants should have journalism experience in the classroom and/or a working newsroom. Familiarity with broadcast and online production techniques is helpful. Interns with the necessary skills will be given the opportunity to produce news stories and content that may be broadcast on KERA or included on our website.

The successful applicant will be able to spend portions of at least two days a week at KERA and a minimum of 10 hours a week. Preference will be given to interns who can spend at least two semesters working with our news team.

Most of our news is produced for regularly scheduled public radio broadcasts. We also produce video segments and programs for television and the web, and are increasingly involved in generating online content that incorporates social media.

This internship opportunity with NTPB is an unpaid opportunity and no compensation will be given. To qualify for an internship with KERA/KXT, the individual must be currently enrolled full-time as an undergraduate; have completed his/her freshman year; be returning to college or currently be a full-time sophomore, junior or senior; and be carrying a minimum of 12 credits per semester. Written documentation from the college stating the intern’s undergraduate full-time status must be received before the internship begins. Internship opportunities may be from six weeks to multiple semesters. It is preferable that the intern opportunity is for class credit.

The intern will meet the education standards set forth by the university or college managing the internship. Excellent communication skills are required, with particular emphasis on good verbal and written skills. Student must exhibit maturity and dedication to the internship.
