KERA Art&Seek News Production Internship – Summer 2017
Do you regularly refer friends to This American Life episodes or begin conversations with “I heard this story on NPR…”? Do you have a love for the arts and want to share it? Can you work independently on a variety of tasks – and get them all done? If yes – and you’re a student with designs on a media career – you might just be the Art&Seek Intern KERA is looking for.
Each semester KERA provides one Art&Seek intern with valuable experience in arts journalism and a chance to dive deep into the arts scene in Dallas, Fort Worth and Denton. You will get to work with award-winning journalists, and help shape Art&Seek stories for the web and radio.
All applications must include a cover letter, resume, three sample pitches for arts/culture related stories. Applications should also include samples of your work. These can include, but are not limited to, written news stories, audio stories, photography or video work. Please also include a link to an online portfolio if you have one. Applications that are incomplete will not be accepted.
As a part of our Art&Seek team you will be expected to conduct interviews with local and national artists, actors, musicians and filmmakers; report on arts related events and issues, and draft web posts based on your interviews and reporting. You’ll also update the Art&Seek calendar, post on our social media accounts, assist our videographer, collect sound for radio stories and perform other duties.
The Art&Seek intern also helps out one day a week on Think, learning the ropes of producing a daily radio show – compiling guest/topic research; writing daily rundowns, producing audio for shows; pitching show and story ideas; greeting and escorting in-studio guests; and other duties.
Interns must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student or undergrad with freshman year completed. You must be available to work 15 to 20 hours (unpaid) a week, in shifts of at least 4 to 5 hours. You must have some knowledge of public radio, be familiar with ArtandSeek.org, and have strong, proven writing and editing skills with a solid understanding of AP style. Audio editing experience, previous experience working for a daily news organization and knowledge of social media practices are not required, but are preferred.
All applicants must apply by March 31, 2017
