KERA’s American Graduate Initiative

As part of a national public broadcasting project American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen , KERA is focusing on ways to keep kids on the path to graduation. This multiyear initiative to fight the dropout crisis will play out on all of KERA’s platforms, with news stories and community outreach through radio, television, web sites, social media and events.
Below are some of the highlights so far.
Teaching the Future 
Meet a group of cutting-edge North Texas teachers, see them in action as they bring their innovative approaches to the classroom and hear their thoughts on the future of education. Details » 
Students Speak Out 
In this hour-long television special, we’ll find out what it takes to finish high school with four North Texas students who overcame the odds to graduate, and two students still working hard to finish. Details » 
KERA put on two student forums in March, the first steps toward a televised student town hall to be aired later this year on KERA-Channel 13. Click here to view the archived videos. 
Reporters Bill Zeeble and Stella Chavez have launched an ambitious five-year project called Class of ’17 . Bill and Stella will follow a diverse group of ninth graders from across North Texas all the way through high school graduation – or whatever comes next. Their stories are airing on the radio, 90.1 FM, and a blog, the Class of ’17 Yearbook . So far listeners and readers have met six of the students:

Grading the Teachers (date: 12/4/13)
Dallas ISD is looking at changing the way that it evaluates its teachers, moving to a system that connects teachers’ individual compensation to the achievement of their students. We’ll find out about the district’s new Teacher Excellence Initiative  this hour from DISD Superintendent Mike Miles.
Los Graduados (date: 10/23/13)
Latinos are the fastest growing segment of the American population, yet they lag behind when it comes to higher education. We’ll talk about the obstacles that Latino high school students face with Bernardo Ruiz, whose documentary is The Graduates/Los Graduados .
The Smartest Kids In The World, And Why (date: 9/11/13)
Why are America’s public school students lagging behind those in other countries? Investigative journalist Amanda Ripley looked at classrooms from Finland to South Korea to find out how teachers’ pay, tutoring systems and testing influence students’ success around the world.
Another Go At Graduating (date: 9/4/13)
For students who face incredible challenges at home, sometimes dropout prevention plans aren’t enough. But teens who leave school can come back. How do districts recognize which at-risk students are serious about succeeding, and what are the best ways to bring out the strength they’ll need to finish? As part of KERA’s American Graduate Initiative, we’ll spend the hour with Bronson Lewis, who helps run the Lewisville Learning Center’s Night High School, and Kathy Goad, project director for the WINGS dropout recovery program in DeSoto ISD.

The March 7 student forum —called Our Schools. Our Voices – was held in KERA’s Community Room in the station’s Dallas offices. Leadership DISD co-sponsored the event as part of Dallas Public Schools Week.
The March 27 forum, co-sponsored with the United Way of Tarrant County and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Fort Worth, was held at the club’s Martin Safe Haven branch.
