Art&Seek Intern — Spring 2020
North Texas Public Broadcasting
KERA TV, KERA 90.1 and KXT 91.7
North Texas Public Broadcasting, Inc., the PBS and NPR affiliate of North Texas, is a not-for-profit public media organization reaching the fifth-largest media market in the United States through KERA-TV, KERA 90.1 FM and music station KXT 91.7. For nearly 60 years, North Texans have turned to KERA as a vibrant destination for community engagement and lifelong learning. KERA produces original multimedia content, carries the best in national and international public television and radio programs, and provides online resources at a constellation of websites, including kera.org, keranews.org, kxt.org and artandseek.org.
Do you regularly refer friends to The Daily episodes or begin conversations with “I heard this story on NPR…”? Do you have a love for the arts and want to share it? Can you work independently on a variety of tasks – and get them all done? If you said “yes” – and you’re a student with aspirations of a media career – you might just be the Art&Seek Intern KERA is looking for.
Each semester KERA provides one Art&Seek intern with valuable experience in arts journalism and a chance to dive deep into the arts scene in Dallas, Fort Worth and Denton. You will get to work with award-winning journalists, and help shape Art&Seek stories for the web and radio.
All applications must include a cover letter, resume, three sample pitches for arts/culture related stories. Applications should also include samples of your work. These can include, but are not limited to, written news stories, audio stories, photography or video work. Please also include a link to an online portfolio if you have one. Applications that are incomplete will not be accepted.
Although this internship is unpaid, interns will receive academic credit for their work with KERA.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
As a part of our Art&Seek team you will be expected to conduct interviews with local and national artists, actors, musicians and filmmakers; report on arts related events and issues, and draft web posts based on your interviews and reporting. You’ll also update the Art&Seek calendar, post on our social media accounts, assist our videographer, collect sound for radio stories and perform other duties.
Interns must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student or undergrad with freshman year completed. You must have some knowledge of public radio, be familiar with ArtandSeek.org, and have strong, proven writing and editing skills with a solid understanding of AP style. Audio editing experience, previous experience working for a daily news organization and knowledge of social media practices are not required, but are preferred.
This internship will begin around January 20, 2020, and will continue through about May 15, 2020. You must be available to work 15 to 20 hours (unpaid) a week, in shifts of at least 4 to 5 hours.
