Hour 2: How can parents deal with the challenging and life-changing diagnosis of an autistic child? We’ll talk this hour with one such parent, Tom Fields-Meyer. He writes about his experiences in the new book “Following Ezra: What One Father Learned About Gumby, Otters, Autism, and Love From His Extraordinary Son” (New American Library, 2011).

This is such a meaningful topic today. I too am raising a child with a mild form of Autism and it took years of hard work, therapy and battling ignorance to get him the acceptance and support that has allowed him to be a successful and happy 10 year old. Autism makes our children think outside the box and communicate in ways that may seem difficult and baffling but, once we go beyond the fear and anger and open our minds and meet our children with love and acceptance, there is a richness and a reward to parenting a child with Autism.
