Art and Health

Hour 1:           Can exposure to art improve the ability of sick or recovering patients to heal more rapidly and more completely? We’ll discuss the case for “evidence-based art” this hour with Kathy Hathorn, CEO and Creative Director, and Upali Nanda, Director of Research at American Art Resources – an organization that aims to improve the healthcare experience of patients, visitors and staff at hospitals. Hathorn and Nanda will participate in a Business Council for the Arts seminar at the Winspear Opera House this afternoon.

What a fascinating subject! I am a local medical illustrator, and while a large portion of my work is directed towards medical education I do enjoy creating fine art as well. I was wondering where do you get the artwork for your programs and is there a way for artist to join your network of suppliers?

    Kind regards,
    Alexandra

The in person seminar was excellent; Kathy and Upali were there and they are quiet a treat to listen and see in person. I am glad I attended and look forward to more.

[...] KERA’s “Think” program recently featured the topic of studies in evidence-based art which have shown that art in patient rooms can help with the healing process, minimize patient anxiety and reduce overall costs. In an effort to create a patient-centered healing environment, Parkland has partnered with the Business Council for the Arts and American Art Resources, to obtain art for new patient rooms.
