Hour 2:           What are the practical, ethical, and moral issues we face when a beloved pet nears the end of its life? We’ll talk this hour with bioethicist and author Jessica Pierce whose new book is “The Last Walk: Reflections on Our Pets at the End of Their Lives” (University Of Chicago Press, 2012).

When my German Shorthaired Pointer was 13 y.o., he developed a bone infection in his foot as a result of my quicking him when trimming his toenails. He was very stoic, and it was difficult to know how much pain he was in, however, there were several clues. He hated to be out in the rain, and one day I looked out in the yard an saw him laying on the ground in a rain shower. He could not get up. He would never have stayed there by choice. I wish we had been able to afford the cost of some additional treatments, which were extremely expensive, and were probably not going to save him. In retrospect, I wish i had pursued more options.

Excellent contents! I needed to hear because I have a old dog.

Thank you for this program. I downloaded her book because, although sad, it may help me through this difficult time I’m having watching my almost 15 year old terrier decline. It is heartbreaking.

Thank you for this show. I’ve asked the library to purchase this book so I can read it and others will be able to as well. I am currently taking online courses with ACAN towards certification in small animal naturopathy. I have two terriers who are about to turn 14 and 15 and I’m hoping the naturopathic lifestyle that I’ve adopted for them will keep them around for much longer. For my elective, I’m planning on taking a class in animal hospice care so that I can keep them comfortable when we reach this point in their lives. I’m hoping this book will be a great resource for class.
