KERA Privacy Policy

At KERA, we recognize and respect the importance of your privacy, and are firmly committed to protecting it. KERA adheres to a strict policy in order to ensure the privacy of your personally identifiable information (such as full name, address, e-mail address, telephone number and/or other identifiable information), and to preserve the integrity of its member donors’ data.

This Privacy Policy applies to information collected through the KERA websites and apps, and through other means, including in person, by phone, by mail or email you send to KERA, or data we acquire from third parties that is not a result of interaction with our services.

Please read our Privacy Policy carefully, and if you have any questions or concerns, please contact Audience and Member Services via e-mail at our Contact Page or by phone at 214-740-9272 or metro 972-263-3151, ext. 272, or by mail to KERA Audience and Member Services, 3000 Harry Hines Boulevard, Dallas, TX, 75201.

User Information

Personally-identifiable information may be collected through KERA websites and apps and through other means, including in person, by phone, by mail or email you send to KERA, or data we acquire from third parties that is not a result of interaction with our services, but you are not required to provide this information unless you desire to give it to us. If you choose not to provide this information, then certain offers may not be available to you. These offers may include transaction processing, direct marketing, contest or sweepstakes registration, community postings, online membership registration, e-newsletter signup, etc.

KERA may use your personally identifiable information for activities explained above, for internal and marketing promotional purposes, or when lists of customers’ standard mailing addresses are made available to carefully screened nonaffiliated not-for-profit organizations whose products or services might interest individuals who interact with KERA, unless you request that we do not provide such information to these companies. (See Opting Out of Member Name and Address Exchanges below.)

In addition, we occasionally may employ affiliated third parties on our behalf. They may have access to the personal information needed to fulfill their functions, but may not use it for any other purposes.

KERA does partner with outside companies for web content, special offers, promotions and other related activities. In cases where offers or information are requested by outside companies, when you choose to offer any personal information to such company, you are providing this information to a third party. KERA is not responsible for the privacy practices or content of any other party’s site.  Please consult those sites to learn more about their privacy policies.

Online Security

Personally identifiable information, including payment card numbers and other financial information, that you enter into various KERA website functions, including Donate, is stored in encrypted form on secure servers. Access to personally identifiable information in our databases is strictly limited to specific KERA employees and contracted affiliated third-party vendors who handle member communications, process online contributions and fulfill merchandise orders.

Cookies, Web Beacons and Browsers

A cookie is a piece of data stored on the user’s device containing information about the user. KERA uses cookies to recognize your identity in KERA websites, apps and contribution functions so you don’t have to reconfirm each time you visit our site. Certain other sections also use cookies to accurately count visitors to that content. In addition, sponsorship service vendors who service sponsorship messages onto KERA websites and apps, and third-party vendors that measure and analyze the use of the KERA websites and apps for KERA, may also use their own cookies.

KERA and any third-party vendors that measure and analyze use of KERA websites and apps for KERA may also use web beacons, alone or in conjunction with cookies, to help compile information about and facilitate usage of KERA websites and apps.  A web beacon is an electronic image which can be used to recognize certain information on your computer, such as cookies, and the time and date of a page viewed.

If you wish to prevent certain or all cookies or web beacons from being set to your device, you may disable them in your browser’s preferences, although your browser might then be unable to accommodate certain functionalities on the KERA Websites.

Additionally, this site has implemented Google Analytics to measure traffic, and may use its remarketing feature to purchase ads on Google’s Display Network. This enables third parties (including Google) to display ads from our underwriters on other Internet sites. By using first-party cookies (such as Google Analytics) and third-party cookies (like Google’s DoubleClick cookie) together, the site and third party vendors are able to serve ads to visitors of this site. No personally identifiable information will be shared in these transactions. If you wish to opt out of Google Analytics for Display Advertising or customize your Google Display Network ads you can use Google’s Ad Settings. You can also opt out of Google Analytics completely, by following the instructions on this page: Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

Contributions and Payment Card Security

KERA offers you the ease of making membership contributions and product purchases via payment card. KERA and our affiliated third-party vendors, who support KERA websites and apps, the Donate pages and payment card processing utilize up-to-date best practices to guarantee payment card account information security and to secure any information from your computer to our server. All payment card transactions are done through a secure server; this means that any information you submit is encrypted on its way between computers. Your payment card information is used only for your intended purpose — for the purchase or contribution you wish to make.

E-Newsletter

KERA offers free electronic newsletters to users. These newsletters include highlights of KERA programming and other information of interest to KERA viewers and listeners. To subscribe, you must provide your email address. To remove yourself from the mailing list, follow the instructions at the bottom of the e-newsletter.

E-Mail Address Policy

KERA maintains customer databases with email addresses of viewers, listeners and members, web visitors who have provided them to KERA by registering at our sites, audience members who e-mail questions about membership or programs and donors who submit online membership contributions.  We use these addresses to send newsletters, information about KERA programs, websites, services or membership, or to correspond about other offers.

You will only receive e-mail from KERA based on information you supply us, and this information will not be shared with nonaffiliated commercial third-party organizations that will contact you without your consent.  To remove yourself from the mailing list, follow the instructions at the bottom of the e-mail.

Links to Other Websites

Pages on kera.org and other KERA sites may contain links which, if you choose to click, will lead you to websites controlled by third parties (PBS, NPR or PRX, for example). KERA is not responsible or liable for the actions of these third parties, including how they process personal information or for the content posted on their websites. If you decide to use a link on the KERA site to visit another website, we encourage you to review the posted privacy policy to learn how any personal information you provide to that site is processed. Your use of a third-party website is at your own risk.

Public Forums

This site may at certain times make chat rooms, forums, message boards and/or news groups available to you. Please remember that any information that is disclosed in these areas becomes public information. You should therefore exercise caution when deciding to disclose your personal information in these areas.

Children’s Privacy Policy

KERA takes children’s privacy very seriously. Because our children’s content speaks to a special audience, websites that provide components for children must follow additional guidelines above and beyond the standard KERA online policies.

Visitors Under 13: You must be at least 13 years old to register for email newsletters or other features of the KERA websites, to participate in any contests, or order any products. If you are under 13 years of age, please do not send any information about yourself, including your name, address or e-mail address. If we discover that we have collected any personally identifiable information from a child under the age of 13, we will remove that information from our database as soon as possible.

Visitors Between 13 and 18: Visitors between the ages of 13 and 18 must obtain permission from their parents or guardians before registering for email newsletters or other features of the KERA websites, participating in any contests, ordering merchandise online or otherwise sending any personally identifiable information.

Membership List Policy

Membership is KERA’s single most important source of support, and KERA’s relationship with its members is the highest expression of our commitment to our mission.  KERA has established the following policy and practices for use of our online and offline membership and donor lists to protect the privacy of our members and ensure control in safeguarding against any unauthorized use.

Use of Membership List by KERA

KERA regularly contacts its members to carry out necessary and normal operations.  In addition, KERA also communicates with its members by phone or email.  All membership communications are conducted directly by KERA or through an affiliated third party, such as a direct marketing firm, acting on behalf of KERA.

Name and Address Exchanges

From time to time, KERA makes its membership list available to select nonaffiliated third-party not-for-profit organizations and receives their lists in exchange.  Exchange of the list allows KERA to expand its membership base by obtaining the names and addresses of other likely donors, and provide a valuable source of additional funding.  However, KERA will not disclose your information if you choose to opt out of these exchanges. (See Opting Out of Member Name and Address Exchanges below.)

KERA defines a nonaffiliated third party as any person, company, partnership or other party that is not controlled by or acting on behalf of, or at the request of KERA for the purpose of fundraising, underwriting or development for KERA.

KERA does not sell or exchange names or other personally identifiable information to commercial third parties that are not affiliated with the Organization, any political organizations, religious groups, credit card mailers or certain public advocacy or self-interest organizations.

Opting Out of Member Name and Address Exchanges

If you do not want your name exchanged with other nonaffiliated third-party not-for-profit organizations, please contact Audience and Member Services via e-mail at our Contact Page or by phone at 214-740-9272 or metro 972-263-3151, ext. 272, or by mail: KERA Audience and Member Services, 3000 Harry Hines Boulevard, Dallas, TX 75201

KERA will periodically inform its members of the potential for name and address exchanges and how to opt out of such mailings.

Updating, Correcting Inaccuracies or Removal of Personal Information

Upon request to KERA, you may a) correct or update any personal information in the database that you state is erroneous, or b) request KERA to make reasonable efforts to remove your personal information from the kera.org database. The user understands that it may be impossible to delete personal information entirely because of backups and records of deletions. Please contact Audience and Member Services and our customer service representatives will assist you. (See Audience and Member Services Contact Information below)

Protection of KERA and Others

We will release account and other personal information if we believe release is appropriate to comply with the law or to protect the rights, property or safety of KERA, our users or others.

Compliance

KERA will take appropriate measures to ensure against unauthorized use of membership and donor lists, including requiring any third party to abide by KERA’s compliance requirements.

Acceptance of Privacy Policy for KERA Websites and Apps

By using KERA websites and apps, you signify your agreement to the terms and conditions of this Privacy Policy.  If you do not agree to these terms and conditions, please do not use KERA websites and apps.  We may change this Privacy Policy from time to time.  Please check this page periodically for any changes.  Your continued use of KERA websites and apps following the posting of any changes to these terms will mean that you have accepted those changes.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

KERA reserves the right, at our sole discretion, to change, modify, add or remove portions of this policy at any time.  Please check this page periodically for any changes or contact Audience and Member Services. (See Audience and Member Services Contact Information below)
