A Look Ahead At The Week’s Art&Seek Picks
ArtandSeek.net August 29, 2018 19We’re in the final days of August and this weekend means an official adios to summer. The good news is, for most people that means a three-day weekend. Get out and enjoy the final lazy days of summer with one of these art-related events hand-picked for you by the Art&Seek team.
Wednesday
In Dallas, RO2 Art gallery presents “Chaos!!!!!” its sixth annual Small Works Spectacular. Because the pieces are small, the space is filled with works by more than 100 artists from North Texas, as well as from around the US and Europe.
Fort Worth Public Library’s Northwest Branch has a photo exhibition about the great Comanche leader Quanah Parker and his mother Cynthia Ann. It’s on view through Sept. 28.
Thursday
To close its 17th season, Uptown Players presents “Perfect Arrangement,” a comedy about the Cold War ’50s when gays were hunted as security threats like Communist spies. It’s at the Kalita Humphreys Theater through Sunday.
Learn how to macrame at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center in Denton. The beginner’s class will teach you everything you need to know about this crafty favorite from the ’70s and you’ll go home with your very own bumblebee plant hanger.
Friday
For your Labor Day weekend enjoyment, the City of Bedford host’s the 10th Annual Bedford Blues & BBQ Festival. Catch legends like Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Tab Benoit at the three-day festival. Bluesmen Gregg Smith and Quentin Moore kick off the event on Friday. And, did we mention there’ll be barbeque?
In Dallas, Shakespeare’s dark comedy “The Winter’s Tale” opens with some 200 performers on stage at the Wyly Theatre. Tickets for the Public Works Dallas event are free but are limited for the weekend run.
Saturday/Sunday
At the Bath House Cultural Center in Dallas, six artists use different styles and media to convey the current endangered status of freedom in Venezuela. See the exhibition “Liberation: Art from Venezuela.”
In Allen, the gallery Blue House Too presents “Abstract Dreams,” an exhibition of colorful oil paintings by the artist Brigitte Salvans.
Celebrate summer’s end with the Labor Day Lake Fest in Granbury. This three-day festival includes shops and a petting zoo in the historic town square. Be sure to be there Sunday evening when there will be a lighted boat parade.
In Coppell, the comedy, “Reel Men: The Fitzhugh Brothers,” returns to open Theatre Coppell’s new season. Ron Chapman’s play follows three grown brothers who’ve decided the best way to get over their sibling rivalry – is to go on a fishing trip.
Monday
In the spirit of the day, Garland will be holding its annual Labor Day Parade with local bands and floats. After the parade festivities, stick around for the car and truck show.
To go with its current Takashi Murakami exhibition, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is screening the Japanese anime classic “Howl’s Moving Castle” and five more recent critically acclaimed anime feature films.
Tuesday
Texas artist Harry Geffert died last year, having taught at TCU for 27 years and establishing the esteemed Green Mountain Foundry. See a collection of Geffert’s sculptures at Cris Worley Fine Arts in Dallas.
Photos by artist Kathy Lovas have taken over the hallways in the Art Building at Texas Woman’s University in Denton for her elaborate installation, “Glitched and Taped.”
