Is The “OperaTruck” Rolling In To Your Neighborhood?

ArtandSeek.net 16

The Dallas Opera is rolling into neighborhoods in an 18-wheel flatbed called “OperaTruck.”

The opera joins Dallas Symphony and Fort Worth Opera, which have also taken  pop-up concerts on the road.

“When it rolls into town to deliver some of these family programs it really makes quite an impact,” said Ian Derrer, general director and CEO of Dallas Opera.

Performers on the mobile stage will engage families with opera programs, including Doctor Miracle and Jack and the Beanstalk. Audiences are encouraged to bring their own seating.

It was retrofitted and donated by Quincy Robert, a Dallas Opera trustee and CEO of Roberts Trucking, the largest Black-owned construction hauler in Dallas.

“After a year without live performances, I can’t wait to see the OperaTruck in action in our communities,” said Robert in a statement.

The pop-up truck gears to bring free opera to new audiences. “OperaTruck” will make its debut in May.

The return to live performances for TDO kicked off in early April. Derrer called the return “an incredible experience.”

On Sunday, the opera finishes its spring chamber concert “Garden Serenades” at the Nasher Sculpture Center. The outdoor concert, featuring small ensembles of string and brass, will feature classical music of Mozart and Vivaldi. Saturday’s concert has been cancelled due to expected bad weather.

Here’s the schedule for the “OperaTruck” performances:

  • Saturday, May 8 at 2 p.m., First United Methodist Church of Heath
  • May 15 at 2 p.m., Trinity Basin Preparatory School
  • May 23 at 3 p.m., St. Matthew’s Cathedral
