Joe Papp was the founder of the Public Theater, Free Shakespeare in the Park and producer of groundbreaking plays like Hair, A Chorus Line and For Colored Girls. He created a “theater of inclusion” based on the belief that great art is for everyone.

True Colors: LBGTQ+ Our Stories, Our Songs
This new PBS special is a celebration of the stories and music that make us who we are. Offering a unique look at the history of the LGBTQIA+ community in the United States, this program shares real-life stories of hope, resilience, and triumph from people across the country, artistically represented through thematically relevant music. Exploring the personal journeys of remarkable individuals, the program connects these heartfelt stories with the history of the movement.
Tony and Emmy Award-winning artist and author Harvey Fierstein hosts the documentary segments with performances by Indigo Girls; country-pop singer Billy Gilman; indie-pop singer-songwriter Morgxn; drag artists Peppermint, Alexis Michelle and Jujubee; Glee sensation, Chris Colfer; celebrated Christian singer Trey Pearson; trans opera singer Breanna Sinclairé; and Tony, Emmy, and Grammy Award-winner André de Shields.

Finding Our Voice
Explore the memories and experiences of those who helped develop a thriving gay and lesbian community in the heart of the Bible Belt. This program contains interviews, personal stories, and archival news clips pertaining to the history of the LGBTQIA+ community in Dallas from the late 1970s through the 1990s, with prominent figures talking about their experiences and feelings from the Dallas gay scene.
