Work often fulfills the need for belonging and purpose — needs that have traditionally been met for many by religious affiliation. Carolyn Chen, associate professor of ethnic studies at the University of California, Berkeley, joins host Krys Boyd to discuss her five years spent researching Silicon Valley, where she found spiritual practices like mindfulness are being introduced to increase production while affiliations with places of worship outside the office are slipping away. Her book is called “Work Pray Code: When Work Becomes Religion in Silicon Valley.”
