Monday, 5/21

Hour 1:  Developing.

Hour 2:  Why are there so few tenured female scientists and engineers on the faculties of elite American institutions? We’ll discuss the current professional climate for women in the sciences this hour with Sue V. Rosser, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies and Sociology at San Francisco State University. Her new book is “Breaking into the Lab: Engineering Progress for Women in Science” (NYU Press, 2012).

Tuesday, 5/22

Hour 1:  Can the world’s fisheries be sustainably harvested or is overfishing becoming a global problem with few if any solutions? We’ll discuss the state of marine ecosystems this hour with Ray Hilborn, Professor of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences at the University of Washington and author of “Overfishing: What Everyone Needs to Know” (Oxford University Press, USA, 2012).

Hour 2:  Are courage and bravery innate human qualities and what is our “preoccupation with ‘safety'” doing to our lives? We’ll talk this hour with Gordon Livingston, M.D., a West Point graduate, Bronze Star recipient, psychiatrist, and author of the new book “The Thing You Think You Cannot Do: Thirty Truths about Fear and Courage” (Da Capo Lifelong Books, 2012).

Wednesday, 5/23

Hour 1:  It’s all around us, but how recognizable and effective is the language used to persuade us every day? We’ll discuss the history and use of rhetoric this hour with journalist Sam Leith, author of the new book “Words Like Loaded Pistols: Rhetoric from Aristotle to Obama” (Basic Books, 2012).

Hour 2:  How powerful can the struggle for peace really be? We’ll spend this hour with Nobel Peace Prize recipient Leymah Gbowee who helped lead the Liberian Mass Action for Peace, a coalition of Christian and Muslim women who sat in public protest, confronting Charles Taylor – Liberia’s ruthless president and rebel warlords to achieve peace. Gbowee will address the World Affairs Council of Dallas Fort Worth this evening in conjunction with the Embrey Human Rights Program at Southern Methodist University.

Thursday, 5/24

Hour 1:  How can an American political movement be both incredibly successful and publicly reviled at the same time? We’ll talk this hour with Eric Alterman, Distinguished Professor of English and Journalism at Brooklyn College and CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, columnist for The Nation, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, the Nation Institute and the World Policy Institute, and co-author of “The Cause: The Fight for American Liberalism from Franklin Roosevelt to Barack Obama” (Viking Adult, 2012).

Hour 2:  Who dreamed up frozen food and how did a fur trapper working in Labrador Canada change our diets forever? We’ll find out this hour with bestselling author Mark Kurlansky. His new biography is “Birdseye: The Adventures of a Curious Man” (Doubleday, 2012).
