With the start of September, new art abounds in North Texas. From the abundance of opening receptions to art talks and art walks, there’s little chance you’ll be able to see it all this weekend — but that’s not going to stop you from trying, is it? From the seasoned art aficionado to the uninitiated, September is one of the best times to discover what makes DFW such a thriving art scene.
Here are some of the weekend’s highlights in art happenings:
1. Objects From A Future Past
Alison Jardine’s first solo exhibition with Erin Cluley Gallery explores her love of nature and a concern for its future. Her current series, Urban Flora, consists of cement casts of plastic bags found in nature and imbued with charcoal and pigments.
When: Book signing @ 5 p.m./Reception @ 6 p.m.
Where: Erin Cluley Gallery, 414 Fabrication Street (Dallas)
Cassandra Emswiler Burd and Lucia Simek
The Art Beef collective presents an exhibition in their Expo Park gallery of new works from Dallas artists Lucia Simek and Cassandra Emswiler Burd. Emswiler Burd is probably best known for her tiled transformation of one of the gallery spaces at Dallas Contemporary. Both women have day jobs at the Nasher Sculpture Center. Cleaver runs from Sept. 2-30.
When: Reception @ 7 p.m.
Where: Beefhaus, 833 Exposition Avenue (Dallas)
3. Alter Ego
Cedar Hill’s Sly Cat Gallery has a new show, Alter Ego, featuring works from Theresa Brooks, June Covington, Laura Davidson, Christine Engebretsen, Curtis Frederick, Sarah Graham, Sandra Morante, David Ross, Hannah Tyler, and Ricky Dean Wyrick.
When: Reception @ 6 p.m.
Where: Sly Cat Gallery, 206 South Broad Street (Cedar Hill)
CYDONIA will feature works from Michael Dumontier, Micah Lexier, Trish Tillman, and Emi Winter in the Homecoming exhibition, which is just one of the many shows you can catch as part of the Fort Worth Art Dealer’s Association’s (FWADA) Fall Gallery Night Saturday. Most FWADA member galleries will be open from noon to 9 p.m.
When: Reception @ 6 p.m.
Where: CYDONIA, 2955 Crockett Street (Fort Worth)
4. David Conn at BRIT
The Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT), located in Fort Worth, hosts a collection of paintings and prints from local printmaker and Shaw Street Studio founder David Conn. Conn is an expert in the creation of linocuts, a printmaking technique where artists use carved linoleum blocks as a relief surface. The result is an intricate weaving of lines reminiscent of a dense forest. Paintings and Prints 2000- 2016 will be open from Sept. 8 – Oct. 26.
When: Reception @ 6 p.m.
Where: Botanical Research Institute of Texas, 1700 University Drive (Fort Worth)
5. Chromatic Shift
Zhuang Hong Yi
Chinese contemporary artist Zhuang Hong Yi presents new works at an introductory solo exhibition at Laura Rathe Fine Art. His vibrant “flower bed” creations are constructed from rice paper, which Hong Yi paints and folds by hand. The result is richly-textured works which beg to be seen up close and from all angles.
When: Reception @ 5 p.m.
Where: Laura Rathe Fine Art, 1130 Dragon Street (Dallas)
