The Dallas Museum of Art‘s monthly Late Nights at the DMA  is just the ticket for budding artists. This month’s theme explores virtues, so you can find out if you’re a sinner or a saint with a variety of art-related family-friendly programming. Kids can learn to write their names in hieroglyphics; show off their yoga skills; and everyone can enjoy jazz and zydeco from Louisiana vocalist Quiana Lynell and dance the night away with Prohibition-era music courtesy of The Singapore Slingers. While you’re at the DMA, don’t forget to check out the Jackson Pollock: Blind Spots exhibition. The museum will be open until midnight this Friday so you’ll have plenty of time to explore and find your muse.

Speaking of Jackson Pollack, Oil and Cotton Creative Exchange is offering a Saturday Art Camp that explores the elements and processes of famous artists. In February they’ll take a closer look at Pollack and his unique painting style. Kids will then get to create their own masterpiece to take home to mom and dad. This is the second in a four part series that takes place at Hexter Elementary in East Dallas. In April they’ll study the work Paul Cezanne and in May it’s John Singer Sargent. You can sign up for one or for all three.

Lakewood Conservatory of Fine Arts also offers a variety of art classes for children of all ages. Kids learn about art history and get to experiment with a variety of media including drawing, sculpture, pastels and watercolor. Class sizes are small so everyone can find creativity at their own pace.

Knitting isn’t just for grannies anymore. Thanks to yarn bombs knitting is cool again. Grab your older kids and join Knittie Gritties Saturday mornings at the Oak Lawn branch of the Dallas Public Library and learn the ins and outs of knit one, pearl two. Don’t worry, you won’t have to stock up on hot pink yarn just yet because needles and yarn are provided for beginners.

These days attaching buttons is about the extent of sewing most people do. Learn the fine art of embroidery Saturday morning at St. Matthew’s Cathedral Arts’  Open Art Studio class Embroidery and Milagros. Kiddos will stitch a sampler while they learn all about the art of embroidery and other handcrafted textiles. But wait! There’s more! They’ll also get the opportunity to sculpt tiny milagros, or folk charms, too. Admission is free, but spots are limited, so don’t wait to sign up.
