Art&Seek Jr: Mom-Tastic Adventures For The Whole Family

ArtandSeek.net 10

Heads up, everyone! Mother’s Day is this Sunday. We all know mom is pleased as punch with anything you give her–that macaroni necklace you made in 2nd grade is proof of that. But how about putting the arts and crafts aside and opting for a little quality time with her instead? The Art&Seek calendar is a great resource for choosing the perfect Mother’s Day outing, and to help you out even more, we’ve pulled together a list of some noteworthy weekend picks the whole family will love.

Time’s running out to see the colorful lanterns at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden. In fact, Mother’s Day is your last opportunity to catch Lanterns in the Garden. The festival features over 20 sets of large-scale lanterns crafted from silk, wire, and steel in a collection rarely seen outside of Asia.

Treat mom to old-fashioned fun and toe-tapping music at the annual Mother’s Day Concert and Picnic this Saturday evening at the A.W. Perry Homestead Museum in Carrollton. Bring a picnic basket and a blanket and listen to the New Horizon Dixie Swing Band play from the front porch of the historic home. There will be free ice cream and lemonade and the kids can make a handmade gift or card for mom.

If mom is a jazz lover you won’t want to miss the Martini Blu Mother’s Day Jazz Festival this weekend at Fair Park. The 2-day festival features performances from  Maysa, Kirk Whalum, Marion Meadows, Kim Waters, and many others. Besides all the great music, Fletcher’s Corny Dogs will also be at the Jazz Festival selling their delicious Fair Park originals! Mom, jazz, and corny dogs–can you think of a better combination?  Also, an additional heads up– because of the iffy weather this weekend, the Jazz Festival has been moved from the Band Shell to the Tower Building.

Another event at Fair Park that mom is sure to enjoy is the annual Mother’s Day Concert at  Texas Discovery Gardens. The hour-long concert features a performance by the Women’s Chorus of Dallas followed by a  live butterfly release in the two-story Butterfly House. There are two performances to choose from on Sunday. The 12:30 p.m. concert is for families with young children and features interactive elements. The 2:30 p.m. performance follows a traditional crowd-favorite format. These concerts sell out every year so be sure to grab your tickets early.

If you really want to show mom a good time take her to the 46th Annual Swiss Avenue Historic District Mother’s Day Home Tour this weekend. This year’s tour features five Early 20th-Century homes and, on Saturday only, a historic Gothic sanctuary built by noted architect, C.D. Hill. In addition to touring the homes, you and mom can also enjoy music, refreshments, a vintage auto display, and complimentary mini-coach staffed by neighborhood tour guides who will share all sorts of interesting facts and stories about The District. There’s also a super cool children’s play area in the shady oasis of Savage Park. Kids can take a mini train ride or create a sidewalk chalk message for mom.
