Dallas Opera Cancels Placido Domingo Gala

Late Thursday, the Dallas Opera announced it was cancelling the gala it had planned for next March with Plácido Domingo. It joins a number of classical music organizations that cut ties with the renowned opera star when sexual harassment allegations were first revealed last month. At that time, general director Ian Derrer told the DO’s staff, board and trustees that they would await further developments but the company was committed to providing a safe working environment for its employees, artists and volunteers.

Those ‘further developments’ came today with reports that another 11 women have accused Domingo of sexual misconduct.  The allegations include groping women, attempting to kiss them or persistently asking for private meetings — and that his behavior was a ‘well-known secret’ in the opera world. A representative for the opera icon accused the Associated Press, which uncovered the allegations, with an “inaccurate” and “unethical” campaign against him.

DALLAS, SEPTEMBER 5, 2019 – In light of ongoing developments regarding allegations made against Plácido Domingo, The Dallas Opera has decided to cancel the March 11, 2020 gala, in which he was scheduled to perform. Information on future TDO special events will be announced at a later date.
