March 11, 2011

DALLAS/FORT WORTH – KERA-FM 90.1 is pleased to announce the receipt of three 2011 Texas Associated Press Broadcasters (TAPB) Awards. The awards will be presented at the 2011 TAPB convention on Saturday, April 16, 2011, at the Dallas Marriott Quorum.

Judges awarded KERA  first place honors for its commentary, Fighting About Muslims. Written by guest commentator Dawn McMullan and edited by KERA anchor and senior editor Sam Baker, the story describes a familial debate about Americans’ perceptions and fears about Muslims, post 9-11.

KERA news director Shelley Kofler received two second place awards: Best Serious Feature for Texas Team Ready for Oil Spills, about a special team prepared to battle the effects of oil spills on the Texas coastline, and Best Specialty or Beat Reporting for political coverage.  Kofler’s political reports included reaction in Texas to Arizona-style immigration reforms; the impact of anti-Washington backlash on the congressional race between incumbent Democrat Chet Edwards and GOP challenger Bill Flores; and, how citizens worried about gas-drilling campaigned for and elected a city council majority that passed a moratorium on new gas wells.
