Monday, 5/30

Noon:  From the Archive: Sebastian Junger’s 2010 book, “War” (Twelve Books, 2010) and co-produced and directed documentary “RESTREPO” took on new meaning last month when his partner, filmmaker, photographer and  journalist Tim Hetherington was killed covering the fighting in Libya. We’ll revisit our June 2010 conversation with Sebastian Junger this hour in memory of Tim Hetherington and in honor of journalists all over the world who risk their lives every day to bring us the news.

1pm:  From the Archive: What would motivate a super-star athlete to leave his career and join the military? We explored the admirable honor of Pat Tillman last August with acclaimed writer Jon Krakauer who covered Tillman’s life and the U.S. Military and Bush Administration cover-up of the truth about his death in the book “Where Men Win Glory” (Anchor Books, Paperback, 2010).

Tuesday, 5/31

Noon:  How are archeologists, anthropologists and now geneticists changing what we know about the origins of people on Planet Earth? We’ll talk this hour with journalist, biographer and historian Martin Meredith. His new book is “Born in Africa: The Quest for the Origins of Human Life” (PublicAffairs, 2011).

1pm:  Doesn’t anyone tell the truth anymore? We’ll explore the epidemic of pubic falsehoods and what they mean for society this hour with Pulitzer Prize winning journalist James B. Stewart. His new book is Tangled Webs: How False Statements are Undermining America: From Martha Stewart to Bernie Madoff” (The Penguin Press, 2011).

Wednesday, 6/01

Noon:  How are environmental degradation and climate change affecting our physical well-being? We’ll talk this hour with Dr. Paul Epstein, Associate Director of the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School and co-author of the new book “Changing Planet, Changing Health: How the Climate Crisis Threatens Our Health and What We Can Do about It” (University of California Press, 2011).

1pm:  What does it mean to be Texan? We’ll discuss the controversies and the contrarians who stir them up this hour with documentarian and historian Glen Sample Ely, author of “Where the West Begins: Debating Texas Identity” (Texas Tech University Press, 2011).

Thursday, 6/02

Noon:  Which insects are your favorites and which ones just give you the creeps? We’ll talk this hour with science writer Amy Stewart who covers the vast world of insects in her latest book “Wicked Bugs: The Louse That Conquered Napoleon’s Army & Other Diabolical Insects” (Algonquin Books, 2011).

1pm:  What are we giving away with each click of the mouse and how might the personalization of our web searches, news browsing and other on-line activities influence our democracy? We’ll talk this hour with Eli Pariser, board president of MoveOn.org and author of the new book “The Filter Bubble: What the Internet Is Hiding from You” (The Penguin Press, 2011).
